1.Project: Health status of KV Kannur students in upper primary (Classes VI to VIII)

Project Completion: November 30, 2016

Subject:  Mathematics

 Topic: Statistics 

Subtopic: Measures of central tendencies

2. Objective:

 1. To identify the underweight/overweight students in upper primary classes (Class VI to VIII) by comparing the findings with standard data.

2. Explore the possibility of research to find the reasons for undernourishment, if any, in the findings.

3. Examine the performance of undernourished students, if any, in academics.

3. Students involved in the project: Class XA (57 students)

4.Project outline: The Class XA students are divided in to 12 subgroups. Each group has to collect the data (and share the collected data) of height/weight of girls and boys of classes VIABC, VIIABC and VIIIABC and perform the tasks entrusted to each group. The findings of each group will be consolidated and a final report will be presented for each class

TASKS FOR EACH GROUP (Group members may share the tasks among themselves. One member leads the group)

1.       Collection of the data(The weight or Height of students with their names )

2.       Classify the data by choosing a convenient class size and prepare a frequency table

3.       Find the mean weight/mean height of the grouped data using appropriate method.

4.       Compute the mode of the grouped data using formula.

5.       Construct a less than type cumulative frequency table.

6.       Compute the median weight/height of the grouped data using formula

7.       Construct a less than type cumulative frequency curve and a more than type cumulative frequency curve in the same graph paper and find the median from the graph.

8.       Compare the results obtained with the BMI (Body Mass Index) chart. Find out the underweight / overweight or under nourished from CLASS VI ABC, CLASS VII ABC and CLASS VIII ABC

9.       Presentation of the results obtained in general class by each sub group by explaining the method/procedure/formula etc group wise and submission of project report

 TASK FOR GROUP LEADERS:

1. Record the conclusions obtained by each group.

 2. Discuss the findings by each group.

3. Consolidate the findings and prepare a final report for presentation.
